Starting Over Chapter 3-

Finding a Family

Page 5

Katy's mother hugged her daughter close, remembering the trying times when the twins had been born. After a few moments, Katy pulled away. 'Boy, this is kind of abrupt, huh? We go from where we lived on opposite sides of the United States for almost sixteen years, not even knowing what was happening in each other's lives to living right next door to each other. There's only one being Whose hand is powerful enough to bring that healing on,' Katy mused.

Nicole nodded in agreement. 'This is more than chance or coincidence. This is a miracle. I mean, normally you read about this kind of stuff in books and then say stuff like, 'Oh, how unreal! That would never happen in real life. Stuff like that just doesn't happen.' But now here it is, happening to us, and it is real life. I can't believe we're finally united, after all these years. It's like it's not even happening. Only our Lord could have arranged for the uniting to happen. He worked in your hearts, Gran and Grampa, and showed you the need to give up your running.'

Gran shifted uncomfortably at the turn in subject. 'Would anyone like a snack?' she asked with false brightness, attempting to change the subject.

Heeding the sudden change in the atmosphere, the previous subject was dropped and all six people headed for the new house. Once the family was seated at the table sipping lemonade the problem of where the girls would live came up.

Naturally, the twins' parents wanted both girls with them. They had already moved into the next-door house, so the ideal solution would have been to move Katy into the other house along with the rest of the family. However, Katy was already attached to her new house and room, even after only a day. Nicole, on the other hand, hated the shape and color of her room. Because Katy's grandparents' house was far larger and had a lot of other accessories-such as a pool, a pond, an orchard, and a larger yard ' Gran and Grampa offered to move out and into the other house. The other family agreed to trade houses, with Nicole sleeping in Katy's room until they could fix a room up for her. Brian and Jennifer Evans were ecstatic about having their second daughter back. The only other happier days in their lives were at the twins' birth and the day of the phone calls in December.

Once everything was settled, the girls stopped their parents from dredging up more unsettling facts, agreeing that they would talk about it more later. Upon request, they all decided to let the subject drop for a while. For the moment everyone just needed to digest the new information.

The conversation was bright and energetic as the families reviewed the past details of their lives. Finally the twins' mother and father left the table to go back to their house and begin packing again to transfer to the new house. Nicole and Katy excused themselves and seconds later were heard pounding up the stairs to choose a room for Nicole.

April 21, 2000

Dear Journal,

Hi. It's Katy again. We are now in our new house. I've been really busy for the last couple of days, so I really haven't had an adequate chance to write before now. Anyway, the house's got an incredible room for me, and everything down stairs is green, white, and light blue. The backyard has a swimming pool, a garden, an orchard, and a fishpond.

Once I got here I set up my room and then headed out on my bike. I found a stable almost right off. There is a wonderful stable right up the road. It's called Spruce Ridge Stables. There are five big barns, one each for levels of riding, ponies, and a boarding barn. I get to ride a beautiful Thoroughbred mare named Desert Vixen. She is a dark bay, and she has a blaze on her face. She's a lot of fun to ride and a great jumper.

The other day I went on a trail ride on her and I met another girl. Her name is Nicole Evans. It's actually not so strange that she has the same last name as I do, because she is my sister! That's right! My SISTER! It's great, especially since she is horse crazy like me. I finally found out the truth about my parents. They are still alive, and now they're living right next to us. Well, actually, I'm living with my parents now. Kind of. It's sort of hard to explain.

We had a little jumping contest and I suppose she approved of me because she looked and acted impressed. She was really good, too. She has a beautiful dappled gray gelding named Chromium. She didn't say if or not, but I don't think he's her own.

On the trip here, I found a horse trailer with horses in it. The man driving it, Mike, took out the horses for me to see. There was Jehosephat and Phantom, who ended up here at Spruce Ridge, and Ruling Dancer and Texas Jewel and a beautiful gray mare. Mike said that I could help walk the horses. I got to walk the beautiful, unnamed horse. She is a Trakehner, now my favorite breed. She is a medium dappled gray and she has four stockings and a huge star on her forehead. I wish she were mine so badly. Maybe not too long from now I'll save up enough money to buy her, if I can ever locate her again.

The rest of our story about how Nicole and I met is too difficult to explain in words, but it's imprinted on my heart, so it doesn't need to be written down. I'll never forget it as long as I live. By the way, Nicole and I are living in the same house. Oh, I guess I already said that. Anyway, Mom and Dad are going to move all their stuff into this house because this house is far nicer than theirs, and Nicole hates her room anyway. Our house has a lot more features than theirs. The other house is just the right size for Gran and Grampa.

Nicole and I going to have tons of fun together! It's already almost as if Nicole and I have been together our whole lives, because we've bonded so well and so fast. This is such a blessing. Remember when I wrote earlier that I wish I had a sister? I never expected it to come true. I don't know what to think.

-Katy
