Starting Over Chapter 3-

Finding a Family

They settled down to setting up jumps for playing that they were in the Olympics. They pranced their horses into the arena and galloped them through the jump course, obviously ending up with no faults. Then they set up a cross-country course in the middle of the floor. The twins comprised twenty jumps and a twisting course. Once the course was set they made the horses go through in record time. After that, Nicole and Katy set up a dressage arena in the middle of the floor, made up routines, and performed them. The girls pretended that the horses were Chromium and the pretty gray mare. They pretended that the riders were themselves, and since neither wanted to claim first for fear of a fight, they pretended that the two tied for everything. After laughing a little over this, Nicole and Katy finally settled down to work some more dressage tests.

It was late into the night when Katy heard a knock on the door. At Katy's consent, her grandmother opened the door and stuck her head in. 'Do you girls realize what time it is?'

They looked at the clock radio. It was after midnight! Gran looked at them with an suggestive glance, then shut the door.

'How did we manage to miss how late it's getting?' blurted Katy once the door was closed, scrambling to her feet to check her clock a second time.

'I don't know, but we'd better get some sleep. We've got a big day tomorrow, working at the barn and all.' Nicole helped Katy put the barn and other pieces of the setup away for the night.

'I suppose you're right. Do you want the bathroom first?' offered Katy, pulling her pajamas out of the drawer.

'Sure, thanks.' Nicole dug her clothes and toiletries out of her backpack and headed for the attached bathroom. Katy drew on her nightclothes and waited for her sister to finish in the bathroom. Then she took care of her teeth, let her hair down, and cleaned the bathroom up a little bit.

The girls were soon ready for bed and crawled in, exhausted. After Nicole turned the light out, they talked for a while.

'Boy, a lot sure has happened in the last couple of days. This is by far the most eventful move we've I've ever had!' Katy said at one point.

'Yeah.' There was a pause. 'I moved here a while ago. I never thought anything like this would happen.'

'I only just got here a couple of days ago.' Katy spoke needlessly just to fill in the impending silence.

'I know.''

There was a pregnant silence.

'Isn't it interesting the way the Lord works?' Nicole asked.

'It really is.' Katy rolled over and tried to keep her eyes open. 'This is wonderful. I can'''t believe I have a sister. All these years I've been hoping and praying for a sister, and now the Lord has finally answered yes.'

Despite her efforts, though, eventually there was a break in the conversation. When Nicole asked Katy something after a few minutes, there was no answer. Katy was asleep, and Nicole soon after.
