How to Think Like A Horse: The Essential Handbook for Understanding Why Horses Do What They Do

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities

- Starting Over Synopsis -

Sixteen year old Kaitlin Evans must endure yet another agonizing move, this time traveling from New York all the way across the United States before settling in Spruce Valley, Idaho. A horse lover at heart, Katy feels broken when she's wrenched away from her stable and friends. Only one thing cheerful happens on the way, and that is meeting with a man who trailers horses for a living. Upon their meeting at a rest stop in Ohio, Mike Trent kindly allowed Katy to help walk the horses. After meeting the horses, Katy was sure that one, a gray mare, was her dream horse. With a vow to find the unnamed horse again someday, Katy and Mike part ways.

Upon arrival at her new house, though, things begin looking up for the teen. She finds Spruce Ridge Stables and immediately heads out for a trail ride. With a lonely heart aching for friends, Katy is ecstatic when she comes to another rider, a girl her own age on the secluded trail. Things begin to feel strange when the look-alikes discover they have the same last name and family tree. With inquiry, Katy and Nicole are informed of their hard separation at birth, with Katy going to her grandparents and Nicole staying with their birth parents. The twins begin to bond right away.

One day while waiting for her sister to finish chores so the girls can go riding, Katy wanders the grounds of the stables. After entering the back of one of the barns, she checks in on the horses to help pass the time. Then she reaches one that seems more than a little familiar ' it's the gray mare, her dream horse from the rest stop! She obtains permission to switch her lease over to the new horse and works with the mare as often as her busy schedule allows.

Tearing herself away from where she works at the stables three or four times a week, Katy settles down to inspect a journal that she discovered in the closet of her new house. It's a startling discovery Katy finds when she reads about a family who went from rags to riches in a matter of days. There is also news about a horse the girl loves, a filly in the pasture by their house. Bonnie Parker, the writer of the diary, can barely restrain her emotions as she writes about her failing health and her beloved filly being beaten into submission by her careless owner's son, Michael Lane. What comes as an even greater surprise is all the talk about hidden coins and a great treasure.

When Katy shares the journal with Nicole, her sister comes out with a secret of her own, one that reveals the reason she hasn't been around very much. While out riding one day, she found a feral, previously abused horse out in the 500 acres of Spruce Ridge Stables, and she has been caring for it for the last several weeks. With a lot of time and help from friends, Nicole manages to earn the horse's trust to the point of submission. The teen bonded as well with Gray Eagle as Katy did with Cleopatra, the previously unnamed horse from the rest stop. With further research on Bonnie Parker's diary, the twins find astonishing news and end up with more than they bargained for.
