The Basque pony, which is also known as the Pottock in the
Basque language, is a tough and hardy pony from the Basque region Navarra,
and southwestern France, where it still lives semi-wild. The Basque people
regard the pony as an essential part of their culture. It was formerly used
as a mine pony and is now used for riding, trekking, and light farm work.
This willing worker is strong and fertile with a calm and energetic
temperament. They make excellent jumpers. They are mainly black or brown,
but bay, chestnut, and particolors also occur occasionally. During the
winter months, the pony is forced to live on spiny plants, and so develops a
protective mustache. These ponies stand between 11.1 and 14.2 hh.
