Gotlands are probably the oldest of the
Scandinavian breeds, and it retains many of its primitive characteristics.
These 12-12.2 hand ponies got their name from their original state of
birth, Gotland Switzerland. Their hind legs tend to be underdeveloped,
although their shoulders are strong and their frame is lightly built and
narrow. The Gotland began as a general-use farm pony, but now the breed is
used in trotting races and even jumping, although their movement at a
gallop is less than impressive.
