An ancient breed, the Norwegian Fjord has strikingly
primitive characteristics resembling the Asian Wild Horse. The Norwegian
Fjord, once a mount of the Vikings, had its popularity spread across
Scandinavia, so they are now found worldwide. Since the beginning of the
20th century the Fjord has remained pure and is often regarded as on of the
ancestors of all modern European draft breeds.
They are incredibly versatile
and make excellent riding ponies as well as good draft horses and driving.
They are quite tireless workers with a kind and biddable temperament. They
are characterized by their distinctive
dun coloring with the upright two
tone mane, which is dark in the middle and light cream on the outside.
They
are stocky with a neat, clean head, a wide forehead, and very powerful neck
with little or no wither. The legs are short and powerful with a little
feathering and exceptionally hard feet. They differ in size and weight, some
being almost the size of light draft horses while others are more refined
and used mostly for riding. Their height generally varies from 13hh to 14hh.
