- Welsh Mountain Pony -

The Welsh Mountain Pony is highly suitable for children, and is an ancient, intelligent pony that is highly lovable and endearing. This pony, originally developed in Wales, could be considered a "people-pony", because it enjoys human companionship almost as much as humans enjoy the companionship of this hardy little pony. This gentle pony is easy for children to ride, even those who are quite young. Welsh Mountain Ponies are handsome animals and are often seen in the ring of in horse shows, both in Britain and America. They are also very well suited for harness work.

Standing under 12.2 hands, the Welsh Mountain Pony is one of the smallest breeds in existence. With its small head, large eyes, and small muzzle, this pony is very adorable. They have relatively long necks and high-held tails. In spite of a difficult past, the Welsh Mountain Pony has done extremely well for itself. It is common belief that the Welsh Mountain Pony was in Wales even before the Romans. The island's climate is often harsh, and because of that, the Welsh Mountain Pony is extremely hardly and highly adaptable, even in such a cold climate. During Henry VIII's reign, he passed an edict that stated that any horse under 15 hands must be destroyed. In spite of this, the Welsh Mountain Pony survived, due in part to the ponies' ability to survive and their incredible intelligence. These are both qualities that attract the Welsh Mountain Pony to many animal lovers today.

The Early Welsh Mountain Pony is believed to have descended from the Celtic Pony. There is also quite obviously Arabian blood in this pony. The blood was used to refine the breed and add a finishing touch. The Mountain Pony should have a pretty, Arab-like head with kind, wide set eyes and small, alert ears. Their necks should be of good length and be arched, also having a good sloping shoulder, deep chest, sort strong back, and fine legs with good hocks. They shhould have a good depth of girth with a rounded rib cage and muscular hindquarters. Their legs have particularly dense bones and short, strong cannons. They can be any color except skewbald or piebald.
