The gray
horse's skin pigment is dark and the coat contains black and white
hairs. Gray horses are generally born very dark or even black and
lighten with age. There are different kinds of grays, too: light
gray, which appears 'white'; flea-bitten gray, which occurs when a
white coats contains spots like freckles; iron, which is a very
dark gray coat,; and dappled gray, which has dark rings or circles
on the gray coat.
