How to Think Like A Horse: The Essential Handbook for Understanding Why Horses Do What They Do

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilities

Cone Weaving

Cone Weaving

What you'll need

  • Cones or poles

Preparation

  • Set the cones 12 feet apart for the walk, at least 20 feet apart for the trot, and 30 feet for the canter, in a straight line.

Game

Student bends the horse around the cones in a weaving pattern.

Variations:

  • This can be done at the walk, trot, or canter, depending on the level of the student
  • Emphasize correct bend
  • Change diagonal between each cone at the trot
  • Change lead at the canter

Added Benefits:

This game emphasizes the correct bending of the horse around the leg, the ability to change the diagonal right at the center line, and the ability to change leads at the canter (may be a canter-trot-canter transition). Student will learn how to properly turn their horses at each of the different gaits, and the best way to ride through a bend.
