Note from Sally Cochran:
My personal goal for each and every one of my students, those that are
currently taking lessons with me in January 2008, is that by the end of the
year, every one of them will still be riding, and they will all be able to
completely care for the horse themselves - meaning, be able to catch the horse
in the pasture, groom, saddle, bridle, and lead the horse up to the arena, then
subsequently untack and put away the horse for the end of the lesson. My
students will make me very proud if they can do all that.

Horses’ Goals:
Libby: To have a mare that is a partner
on the ground, that moves with the handler, regardless of who it is,
unhesitatingly, without question or balking. To have a horse that gives to
pressure in any and every situation, goes forward, backwards, sideways when
asked. To have a horse that trusts her rider/handler and is willing to try
anything, and has the confidence to move forward in her training, whether it is
trailering, showing, trail riding, endurance riding, or anything else.
Tootsie: To be able to calmly show in
any flat/pleasure class, English, as well as a jumping class 2’ or less. To have
a horse that will trail ride safely and calmly, alone or in other company, load
easily onto a trailer without being anxious, easy to catch in a field – even to
the point of coming up to you without you having to go to her. To be able to
jump 2’6” at home with no refusals.
Lady: To be able to pick up and hold
any of her feet as long as necessary, as well as to let the farrier handle/work
with them. To trail ride calmly and safely, pick up canter leads instantly, and
canter/trot a course of 18” jumps without hesitation or refusal.
Enoch: To walk, trot, and canter
calmly, completely under control, with head at a decent setting, no bucking or
funny business. To be able to lunge and yield in either direction, and have a
horse that quickly and calmly works with anyone. To not be “girthy” when tacking
up, to be clipped without a twitch, to do downward transitions without fuss or
resistance.
Dandy: To walk, trot, and canter in
either direction while voluntarily staying on the rail. To be willing and able
to jump a 2’ course at a trot or canter. To come when called or at least to
stand still until caught. To walk faster on a trail ride, calmly walk over
bridges, turn easily and readily when asked, respect people space, give to
pressure, and load and travel in a trailer. To show at an open show by the end
of the year. To be used and behave as a camp and lesson horse.
Prissy: To slow down at the canter,
jump better, and learn to jump a 2’ course with a small rider on her back. To be
shown at a show in jumping classes with a child rider. To learn to “bow” and
“lie down” by the end of the year.
Rocky: To learn to trust people, move
away from pressure, yield to requests. To learn to stand still for mounting,
move off when asked, stop and start when asked, transition quietly and quickly,
pace himself, and learn to distance himself between poles or crossrails. To
become “bombproof” in the ring and on the trail, and remain easy to catch in the
pasture, to stay on the rail at the walk, trot, and canter, without trying to
come in to the middle. To easily and smoothly canter, with “push-button” stops
for new riders. Ultimate goal to be a safe, sane lesson horse for young riders
for camp or lessons, without needing a side walker. |
