A chestnut's coat color is a reddish brown with no black points. the mane and tail are either a lighter (flaxen) or darker shade of the body color. There can be white markings on the legs and face. There are several different kinds of chestnuts, ranging from bright chestnut and red chestnut to liver chestnut. The different kinds are determined by the reddish-gold shades of the hair; the liver chestnut has a dark, liver-colored coat, hence the name.
