The Finnish horse is a coldblooded type
of heavier horse. It was developed from the native Finnish ponies
crossed with other breeds. Originally there was both a light and
heavy strain, but only the light type still exists today. They are
suitable farm work, light to medium draft work, riding, and are
even used for trotting races.
The Finnish horse is a hard and willing
worker with a lot of strength and energy. It has a chunky build
with light, strong legs and a small, square, heavy head. They tend
to exhibit a kind temperament and gentle eyes. Although chestnut
is the most common color, bay, gray, brown and black also occur.
The Finnish horse typically stands between 16 and 17 hh.
